What is a hernia mesh device? How can it hurt me? | Testa Law Group

At first blush, a hernia mesh appears harmless as it looks much like a flat layer screen that protects. The device is then implanted to repair hernias. A hernia is a condition that occurs when tissue or organs protrude through or tear the abdominal muscle. Although it is promoted as a protectionist device, studies have shown that mesh is effective in preventing the recurrence of hernias. Nonetheless, some mesh product devices have been recalled because of complications including infections, bowel obstructions, and adhesions requiring surgery to remove the hernia mesh device.

Hernia mesh complications

Several hernia mesh, manufacturers Ethicon, Atrium, C.R. Bard, Kugel, and others – decidedly placed profits over safety and continuously used deceptive marketing tactics to boost sales. The FDA has accounted adverse events concerning prolonged hospitalization, mesh removal operations and invasive surgery for bowel resection after hernia reconstruction with synthetic or non-synthetic mesh.

Laparoscopic hernia repair with surgical mesh may lead to some debilitating complications, including:

  • Chronic infection
  • Sepsis
  • Fistulas between organs and vessels
  • Hernia reoccurrence
  • Organ perforation
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Severe abdominal or groin pain
  • Obstruction of the small or large intestines
  • Adhesions
  • Internal bleeding
  • Complex seroma
  • Allergic reaction
  • Mesh rejection
  • Mesh extrusion or shrinkage
  • Nerve damage
  • Autoimmune reaction
  • Systemic inflammation
  • Abnormal liver function
  • Need for corrective surgery

Questionable Hernia Mesh Brands & Manufacturers

Some companies produce various types of hernia mesh. However, there are a few big hernia mesh brands. Product types can include hernia mesh patches, sheets, or plugs.

  • Atrium Medical Corp. of Maquet Getinge Group – Atrium independently designed and manufactured the C-QUR line of surgical mesh that is used for hernia repair. The C-QUR mesh is a polyethylene plastic that is coated with an Omega-3 fatty acid fish oil.
  • C.R. Bard – Bard Davol manufactures a variety of different hernia meshes, including 3DMax, PerFix, Kugel, and Sepramesh.
  • Ethicon, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson – Ethicon manufactures two principal brands of hernia mesh: Proceed and Physiomesh. Physiomesh consists of polypropylene laminated with polyglecaprone, while Proceed consists of polypropylene with one side coated in oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC).

Hernia Mesh Lawsuit

Both research studies and lawsuit filings describe the unbearable hernia mesh injuries and related health problems that underscore the possibility of a safe design and highlight the numerous manufacturing defects across the broad list of brands that manufacturer hernia mesh devices.

Plaintiffs voices highlight how manufacturers of hernia mesh devices must answer for their reckless disregard of human life, false representations, and degradation for the health and safety of the community. Medical device manufacturers will be held liable for economic and non-economic losses incurred by plaintiffs after it is determined that they produced defective products, failed to warn about dangers, or breached a duty of care.

The Testa Law Group will investigate your claim against hernia mesh manufacturers who:
